What tools do remote teams typically use to stay coordinated?

Joining my first fully-remote company next month. What software should I expect to be using day to day?

Most remote teams lean on a similar stack: a chat tool for async and quick sync communication (Slack or Microsoft Teams), a video conferencing tool for meetings (Zoom or Google Meet), and a project/task tracker so work is visible without needing constant status meetings (Asana, Trello, Linear, or Jira depending on the team). Shared docs (Google Workspace or Notion) replace a lot of what would've been hallway conversations or printed handouts. Many remote-first teams also deliberately document decisions in writing more than in-office teams do, specifically so people in different time zones aren't left out of context. Don't worry about mastering all of it before you start — most companies walk new hires through their specific setup in the first week.
