What happened with the bison chasing a child at Yellowstone?

The incident happened July 28, 2026, on a boardwalk at Yellowstone National Park, and was captured on video by visitor Brittany Peteler. The footage shows a bison grazing near the boardwalk as a group, including children, walked past; rather than backing away when the bison turned toward them, one child ran past the animal, prompting it to briefly give chase before the child reached safety. No one was injured. Other visitors can be heard in the video shouting warnings to stay back. It's the second bison-related scare at the park in a matter of weeks — a man was hospitalized after a separate bison attack tossed him into the air just weeks earlier. Park officials point out that bison have injured more Yellowstone visitors than any other animal in the park, are unpredictable, can run up to 35 mph (about three times faster than a human), and will defend their space if they feel threatened — which is why the park requires staying at least 25 yards away from bison and other large wildlife like elk, moose, and bighorn sheep.
