How do freelancers usually get paid when clients are in other countries?

Most of the clients I'd work with are based abroad. What are the normal ways freelancers actually receive international payments?

For platform-based freelancing (Upwork, Fiverr, etc.), payment is usually handled through the platform itself — the client pays into the platform, and you withdraw via PayPal, direct bank transfer, or a service like Payoneer, with the platform taking a cut. For independent client work outside a platform, PayPal and Wise (formerly TransferWise) are extremely common because they handle currency conversion with relatively transparent, low fees compared to a traditional international bank wire. Payoneer is popular specifically because it works well in countries where PayPal has limited support or high withdrawal fees. Whichever you use, factor in both the platform/service fee and the currency conversion spread when you're setting your rates — a $20/hr rate can quietly become $17-18/hr after fees depending on how you're getting paid.
