Do you need a technical/programming background to do AI training work?

Interested in AI training gigs but I'm not a programmer or data scientist. Is there a place for someone without that background?

For general annotation and evaluation tasks, no — most platforms are explicitly designed so that anyone who can follow detailed written instructions and pay close attention to a rubric can do the work; that's actually the point, since the tasks are meant to be things current AI can't reliably self-judge yet. Where a technical or specialized background does matter is the higher-paying tracks: reviewing or debugging AI-generated code genuinely needs programming knowledge, and domain tracks like legal, medical, or financial evaluation need people with real expertise in those fields. Strong writing ability and a good grasp of grammar/nuance also matters a lot for language-focused tasks, even without any technical background. So the short version: general tasks are accessible to non-technical people, but the best-paying specialized tracks are gated behind whatever expertise they're evaluating.
