Do I need a lawyer for a small claims court case?

Filing a small claims case for the first time. Do I actually need to hire someone, or can I realistically handle it myself?

In most states, no — and in a number of states, lawyers are actually barred from representing either side in small claims court specifically, because the system is built for people to represent themselves. The process is generally more relaxed than regular civil court: you explain your situation, present any evidence (receipts, texts, photos, contracts), and the judge asks questions directly rather than requiring formal legal procedure. That said, "you don't need one" doesn't mean preparation doesn't matter — organizing your evidence clearly, knowing the exact amount you're owed and why, and being ready to briefly and calmly explain your side makes a real difference in front of a judge who's hearing many cases that day. If the situation is unusually complex, involves a business with its own legal representation option in your state, or the amount is close to the court's maximum limit, a brief paid consultation (not full representation) with a lawyer beforehand can still be worth it just for strategy.
