Are Outlier, DataAnnotation, and similar AI training platforms actually legit?

These platforms look promising but also a little too good to be true. Is this a real, sustainable category of online work or a passing trend?

As a category, yes — this is real, legitimate work, not a fad. Major AI labs genuinely need continuous human feedback to train and safety-test their models (this is the basis of RLHF, reinforcement learning from human feedback), and that demand has grown substantially as generative AI adoption has grown, not shrunk. That said, "legitimate industry" doesn't mean every individual platform is trustworthy, and the same general scam red flags apply here as anywhere else: never pay to apply or to access "training,” be wary of anyone asking you to type credentials for an unrelated account into an onboarding form, and don't trust platforms that guarantee a specific hourly rate or income — legitimate ones don't, since pay depends on task availability and your performance. It's also worth treating this as flexible side income rather than a guaranteed full-time replacement income, since task volume for any individual worker can fluctuate.
